Epic Poem of the Decisive Era
Main Building of Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Residence

Former president Chiang Kai-shek and his wife lived through a critical era that determined the fate of the nation; they were the famed personages of the time. During their lives, they experienced historic upheavals as well as many peaceful times. The theme of the Epic Poem of the Critical Era combines history and poetry to portray their resplendent stories at Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Residence.

Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Residence is located in a secluded environment. Mr. Chiang made an initial inspection on March 1, 1950 and moved in on the 31st of the same month. He lived there for 26 years, until he passed away on April 5, 1975. The residence documents the life of the First Family and played an important role in the history of the founding of ROC.

After Mr. Chiang passed away in 1975, his wife resided abroad in the US for a long period of time. More than 30 years later, the restriction of the area surrounding Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Residence was lifted in 1996 and it was opened to the public for the first time.

Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Residence was repaired and built based on the foundation of the guesthouse constructed by the Taiwan Provincial Government in 1949. It is a simple, practical, two-story building with a slanted roof. Structurally, it amalgamates a wooden structure with reinforced concrete. The building was expanded while Mr. Chiang was still alive. In 2006, it underwent restoration and the project was completed in November 2009.

The main building of the late President Chiang and his wife, along with the servants’ and guards’ quarters, are painted in dark green, which acts as a camouflage and blends into the surrounding woods for protection.

Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Residence comprises four historic monuments; the main building, guest house, Ciyun Pavilion and Victory Chapel. In addition, there are also several ecological parks, forming an ideal recreational place that combines nature with culture and humanity.
